Why should you adopt a rescue dog?

All of the dogs below would have been killed if a rescue group had not saved them. All of these dogs are now in loving, permanent homes.
Last year in Austin Texas over 15,000 dogs & cats were killed simply because there are not
enough good homes for them. The number one breed killed was the Pit Bull. We are lucky to live in Austin because the local shelter does not discriminate against Pit Bulls & Pit Bull mixes. Many shelters automatically kill all pit bulls & pit bull mixes.

Many people adopt a puppy without thinking about the lifelong comitment. As the guardian of a pet you must provide love, exercise, training, food, medical care, shelter & adequate confinement. You must also be willing to deal with inconveniences such as cleaning up after your pet, trinaing your pet not to chew or use the rug as a bathroom. Many people do not realize that a pet does not automatically know how you expect him/her to act.

Rescue groups save dogs from shelters & from the streets. Many of the dogs we rescue out of the shelters are strays who are not reclaimed by their owners. Others are owner realesd animals. This means the animal's 'guardian' purposfully took the animal to the shelter. Many reasons for giving up a pet include:
moving, landlord doesn't allow the pet, pet grew too big, pet is too hyper, I didn't know having a pet would cost so much, I no longer have time for my pet, my boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't like my pet, having a baby, animal is agressive to other animal, animal doesn't match the furniture anymore, etc., etc.
This is unacceptable. People need to take responsibility for their pets. Rescue groups are cleaning up after irresponsible people.

A rescue group takes the animals into their care & provides the things that an animal needs until he/she can be placed with an appropriate family. Because of this close work with the individual animals it is possible for the rescuer to assess each pet's needs & place the pet with the appropriate guardian.

By adopting a rescue dog you are saving a life. I don't believe it is ethical for breeders or pet stores to sell dogs when so many are dying each day in shelters. Each new puppy brought into this world means that another shelter animal will die. Of course responsible breeders are not to blame  for the pet overpopulation but there are many back yard breeders who over breed just to make a quick buck. They pay no attection to who adopts their dogs or to the horrible pet overpopulation thay are contributing to. Many dogs that end up in shelters are pure bred. Every person can do their part by spaying or neutering their pets or by adopting a rescue dog.

Spindletop dogs are evaluated for a companion temperament and we know each dog's personality and what you can expect from the dog.  Our orphans are ready to come to your home with basic obedience and crate training and have all their veterinary care.  We are here to answer any questions regarding the dog and will help you solve problems as they come up.  Of course we love to hear from our adopted dog families for updates and happy stories as well!  We insist that the adopted dog be brought back to Spindletop if a situation arises that endangers the dog's welfare.  Spindletop is actively involved in helping owners to understand and train their dogs versus abandoning them to an overburdened animal control system.

HOW DID THE DOGS END UP AT SPINDLETOP?

Last year in Austin and Houston, Texas over 40,000 dogs and cats were killed simply because there are not enough good homes for them.  Pit Bulls were among the breeds that are killed most often in shelters.  In Austin, the local shelters do not discriminate against Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes.  Many shelters automatically slaughter these animals because of their breed.  Many people adopt a puppy without thinking about the lifelong commitment.  As the guardian of a pet one must provide love, exercise, training, food, medical care, shelter and adequate confinement.  One must also be willing to deal with inconveniences such as cleaning up after your pet, training your pet not to chew on the walls and your new shoes or use the rug as a bathroom.

WHY ARE THE DOGS SPAYED OR NEUTERED?

Spindletop rescues dogs from abuse, neglect, being killed at shelters and found as strays.  There are not enough responsible homes and it is irresponsible and unethical to add to the surplus of unwanted dogs.  Looking at our orphans, you will see beautiful, friendly dogs that represent the average dog and unless dogs are being produced for standard show quality and working performance out of health screened, proven show parents, there is really no difference between those dogs produced casually and Spindletop orphans.  Spay and neuter your dogs, do not add to the bodycount!
